About The GroundSwell Project
The GroundSwell Project

The GroundSwell Project is an independent Health Promotion charity that works in partnership within the health and aged care system to build communities that respond compassionately around end of life. Our vision is for our communities help all Australians to live, die and grieve in line with their values.Because of the historical, over medicalised dying process, and the consequent death denying culture it has produced, there is insufficient community capability to provide meaningful support to individuals and families around the end of life. In Australia now, around 9 in 10 deaths are associated with chronic disease. Because of the current context of declining spending on social services, escalating health care spending requirement and growing social isolation, a coordinated compassionate community response by local people towards their neighbours, friends and family has never been more important.

‘Compassionate communities’ are a core part of public health approaches to palliative care, end of life care and bereavement. There is a growing movement, mainly in western countries to empower communities to be an equal partner in the long and complex task of providing quality care at the end of life

We are currently supporting 9 place-based projects across the country, the impacts from which are being researched by Western Sydney University. We are also developing a world first Death Literacy Index as a social impact tool.

If you are interested in the changes that are happening in Australia around end of life support, please drop by for a chat. We will be at expo stand #1
